The annual DOT inspection is non-negotiable, and the cost of a failure on the road is far higher than the cost of catching it in the shop. Here is the complete 86-point checklist organized into the 12 systems an inspector touches: brakes (service, parking, emergency), coupling devices, exhaust, fuel system, lights, safe loading, steering, suspension, tires, wheels, windshield wipers, body and frame. The 12 things we see fail most often are: out-of-adjustment brake slack, leaking air systems, worn drag links, cracked windshields above the wipe area, missing or burned-out marker lights, slack king pins, missing or improperly mounted DOT placards, frayed seat belts, leaking shock absorbers, worn tires below 4/32 on steers or 2/32 on drives and trailers, missing or non-functional ABS warning lights, and inadequate or contaminated load securement devices. Schedule your annual inspection at least 30 days before it expires so a fail does not become a stranded truck.
